All you need to know about Hydrafacials. Plus, a skincare and makeup routine that can take the heat.

ACCORDING TO RESEARCH from wellness and beauty company Goop, Hydrafacials top the list of most searched beauty terms in Georgia. Here, we explain what they are and answer your most frequently asked questions to help you decide if this facial treatment is right for you as you prepare for your big day.

What is a Hydrafacial?

Hydrafacial is a non-invasive treatment that improves skin health, addresses individual concerns, and creates a glow in about 30 minutes, says Janie Futch, BSN RN. Futch is co-founder and chief operating officer of Altera Aesthetix, which has locations in Savannah, Statesboro, and Richmond Hill. Futch notes, “Unlike traditional facials, it’s performed via device rather than by hand, for deeper penetration and longer lasting results.”

Michelle Turley, an esthetician with Chatham Plastic Surgery, describes the process. “It works by combining water-based solutions that cleanse, correct, and hydrate the skin with a procedure that resurfaces the skin, flushes out the pores, and adds moisture. In addition, we combine LED light therapy to kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and increase cellular activity with microcurrent and lymphatic drainage to leave the skin not only clean and hydrated, but calmer, tighter, and more lifted.”

Hydrafacial is a brand name; there are also other similar systems on the market, each with their own proprietary solutions and boosters.

For example, at Savvy Skin Medical Aesthetics, owner Karen Bouchard, PA-C notes they offer AquaFirmeXS treatments. “It uses proprietary, plant-based stem cell serums, rich with growth factors. We gently infuse these advanced formulations into the skin using a precision micro-cupping tip, then further activate and massage in with a warm, soothing ultrasound handpiece for enhanced absorption and optimal results,” she says.

The serums are targeted to reduce the skin’s inflammation and redness, as well as support collagen, boost radiance, firm the skin, and improve fine lines, says Bouchard. “Patients walk out the door with beautiful, glowing skin, typically event-ready.”

How much does it cost?

In the Savannah area, the cost of this procedure averages between $150 and $400, though pricing depends on what type of add-ons you may choose, such as dermaplaning, lymphatic drainage, and targeted booster serums, all of which may have added benefits.

What are the potential side effects?

Hydrafacials are safe and well-tolerated, even for sensitive skin. However, as with any treatment, there are a few potential side effects to be aware of, like temporary redness and tightness, and mild flaking or breakouts from exfoliation. Practitioners also do not recommend this treatment for those with active rashes or severe active acne breakouts.

Bouchard has some helpful tips for those new to this technique. “It’s important to discuss any allergies you have prior to treatment as this could impact what solutions should be used during your treatment to prevent any problems.” She goes on to note, “You should avoid this treatment if you’ve had a chemical peel, laser, or microneedling within a week prior to the treatment.” She also recommends discontinuing any retinoids, such as Retin-A, five days prior to treatment as this can make your skin more sensitive and reactive.

What results can I expect?

Results of a hydrafacial typically last five to seven days, with many patients noticing their skin retaining a glow and staying smoother and more hydrated for up to two weeks, especially with proper at-home skincare. For long-term improvement in tone, texture, and clarity, experts recommend a series of treatments (usually once a month).

Beauty and the Heat

A local professional’s must-haves for a skincare and makeup routine that can stand up to Savannah’s weather.

After more than 25 years as a professional makeup artist — working with hundreds of brides as well as actors, CEOs, and more  — Dawn Angeletti opened Lalka Beauty Co., a local cosmetic and accessory boutique, in 2023. Since then, Angeletti has expanded her shop’s product inventory to include favorites for every customer. For example, she offers South Korean and French skincare lines, locally made soaps, and organic makeup. We asked her to share some of her favorite picks for Savannah and the Southern coastal climate.

Blinc Amplified Tubing Mascara  Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Water Powder Serum Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics 50 SPF Sunscreen Embryolisse Eau de Beaute Rosamelis

Blinc Amplified Tubing Mascara: Angeletti promises this mascara will last through sweat and those happy wedding tears. Tubing mascaras use polymers to build a tube around each lash, rather than just coating them in pigment. You still get all the visual effects of a regular mascara, but you won’t need to worry about having raccoon eyes. Don’t worry about damaged lashes, either; the mascara can be easily removed with warm water.

Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Water Powder Serum: This is a water-to-powder formula, giving you the polish of a matte skin look without the dryness of a traditional powder. It leaves skin smooth and moisturized and also ensures makeup will stay put.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics 50 SPF Sunscreen: In sunny Savannah, Angeletti says, “Sun protection is a necessity.” This nonsticky, lightweight, vegan sunscreen uses chemical filters to offer SPF 50+. It also features rice and grain fermented extracts to pamper your skin.

Embryolisse Eau de Beaute Rosamelis: If there is one product we need when braving Savannah weather, it’s a good setting spray. And this one is iconic, according to Angeletti. Whether you need to prep your face, set your face, or fix your face, this four-flower toner always has a place in your bag.
