Good Time Charlie

When Charles Russo Jr. isn’t out on deep water or crabbing with his grandkids, he’s at work. “It’s second nature,” he says of the business his father founded in 1946. And yet, judging by the unframed photos covering the walls of his office at Russo Seafood—there he is with Herschel Walker, Coach K, Jimmy Carter, Nathan Deal—this hometown boy still gets his kicks.

Day trips with old Blessed Sacrament and Benedictine classmates are a particular highlight of these summer months. “In the fish business, you’re answering the phone, you gotta get an order out,” he says. “But with fishing, you’re just sitting in the sound. I’m going for whiting tomorrow on Ossabaw. It’s just my buddy and me—we’re catching fish, we’re joking, we’re picking at one another. No phones ringing.”
