Stitch Spectacular
Clementine, by Kristy Roberts
I wish I'd found out about this show earlier! Aurgh! Oh well. There's a lot to keep track of in this town.
Stitch Spectacular is, well, in their own words: "Stitch Spectacular recognizes the exploration of new frontiers in creative hand embroidery. The once humble stitch is a star, and as such, needs to rock the house."
That says it better than I can. They're absolutely right! Handwork, like embroidery, has come to the forefront with the resurgence and popularity of these crafts. Now, it's finding its place in a gallery space.
I'm all for supporting this. It's elevating traditional women's work to the status of fine art, and that is never a bad thing. (Whoops, I seem to have slipped into my perpetual art history student voice there, forgive me.) These pieces are pretty amazing, from whimsical to political.
The ending reception is tonight from 5-8 p.m. at Dimensions Gallery, 412 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The show will be up until February 4th, so go check it out while you can! You can also check out the website for Stitch Spectacular here.
