On deadline: What it's like

Posted by Miss T. J. (06-11-2009)

DO YOU EVER WONDER what it's like to be on deadline at a magazine? It's probably not drastically different from being on deadline at any other place of business. And that's what we are, after all, though it seems so much more glamorous, doesn't it?

Well, I'll tell you. It's exciting, it's maddening -- it's a test of the temper and the will.  It's actually fun and seems very important at the time.  It's a creative time, too, and it's amazing to me, as an editor and writer, how, even at the eleventh hour, I can still spot an error from a mile away!

There will always be the "one that got away," and though I used to lament over it for far too long, I have learned that it's a much better use of my time to move on to the next issue.

This, for me, is the most amazing part of it all.

By the time our July/August issue gets into your (hopefully) happy hands, our staff will be knee-deep into the September/October issue.  July/August will be a thing of the past, and we will be grateful to have put it "to bed," so to speak.

For now, as we try to beat the print deadline, we are all walking a little faster and typing at a quicker pace.  Office chatting is at a bare minimum and the quiet is both necessary and deafening.

It is at times like this when I really appreciate this talented pool of women who are Savannah Magazine.  The writers, editors, advertising executives, designers, interns and various assistants all join together at this time to put out a magazine that we hope will interest and "wow" you, our valued reader.
