Internships: I recently completed an internship with DVF in New York, where I was working with the sportswear designer. I also worked with a small clothing label called Feather Clothing a few years ago. It was just the designer, an assistant and me, so I got an in-depth look at all aspects of a small business.
I am inspired by the active lifestyle. I am an active person. I surf, ski, boat, sail, fly, run and scuba dive. The materials that are used in all of these different sports/activities inspire me.
My favorite style decade is the 1920s. Something about the straight simplicity of the styles from that time are so interesting to me and appeal to my simple design aesthetic.
I never leave home without my iPod and lipstick. A little bit of lipstick goes a long way when you need it to, and you never know when you’ll need to escape from the world for a minute or two, and my iPod is how I do that.
The designer I most admire is Jil Sander. The classic simplicity is just done so incredibly well.
The best advice I ever received came from my mother, who told me to always stay tough and be true to myself.
Tell us about your collection.
My collection was greatly inspired by the sports done in and around the water. I wanted to create garments for strong, confident, athletic women. Garments that a woman would be comfortable and familiar with. I used clean, classic cuts with the bright neoprene colors, keeping the silhouettes simple. It’s an easy going collection.
What’s next?
I have a yearlong apprenticeship with Reebok, working in the apparel design department. It’s up in Boston, and I’m extremely excited. After this apprenticeship, I hope to stay in active sportswear. I love the potential for athletic wear right now. There is so much technology that can be taken advantage of, and it’s really exciting for me to be a part of it.
