The Black Maria Film and Video Festival, started in 1981, is known for its annual roster of bold contemporary works by award-winning independent film- and video-makers that give insight to the human condition, political, social and environmental issues, and aesthetic investigations. It is a traveling showcase that circulates nationwide to more than 50 host institutions.

Through October 26: “Constructs and Inventions: The Etchings of Erik Desmazieres.” A selection of the artist’s technically and conceptually sophisticated etchings.

Through August 31: “Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran.” The first survey of contemporary Iranian photography to tour the U.S., providing a rare and revealing view of Iranian life and experiences.

Through August 31: “Counter Photography: Japan’s Artists Today.” Works by 11 contemporary Japanese artists. The exhibition challenges many commonly-held beliefs about the nature of photography.

Assembled in honor of the late Savannah native, scholar, and MoMA curator Kirk Varnedoe (1946-2003), this remarkable group of works on paper contains pieces by some of the most pivotal artists of the past fifty years—such as Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Richard Serra, and Richard Avedon.

150 Years of Architectural Elegance: The Central of Georgia Railroad’s 1856 Gray Building Headquarters

These exhibitions chronicle the history of SCAD's Kiah Hall. Once the headquarters of the venerable Central of Georgia Railroad and now a college art museum, the landmark Greek Revival building epitomizes the elegance of mid-19th-century architecture. Exhibition assistance was provided through a grant from the Georgia Humanities Council. Complementing the historical overview of the building is a small photographic exhibition that documents the recently completed exterior preservation of the structure, a project made possible by a major Save America's Treasures federal grant and additional assistance from the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation and the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation.

Maps depicting North America, Great Britain and the world are on view in the museum's three map galleries. Highlights include 1597 maps from the earliest atlas of the Americas, 1776 military maps, and other 17th- and 19th-century maps, some of them hand-colored. Cartographers include Wytfliet, Hondius, Monath, Lotter, d'Anville, Faden, Lodge, Cary and Wyld.

The photographs in this SCAD Museum of Art exhibition include iconic examples from pioneering 19th-century practitioners and major 20th-century photographers, who wielded their cameras to capture images of arresting landscapes, richly textured narratives, elegant fashion scenes, singular still lifes and powerful portraits. Featured photographers include Mathew Brady, Eadweard Muybridge, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz and other celebrated masters.

This Old House: Director’s Preservation Tour of the Davenport House

Learn about the preservation and care of the Isaiah Davenport House, recipient of the Preserve America Presidential Award. The museum’s director will lead a tour in and around the home discussing the recent restoration, maintenance issues and techniques for preserving the site for the long term. The tour is limited to twelve people and areas will be visited that are not regularly on tour. The experience will end in the garden with light refreshments.

Learn about tea traditions and experience an early 19th century tea in the historic atmosphere of the Isaiah Davenport House Museum. Patrons will be oriented to the history of tea and tea traditions relating to the early 19th century consumer. They will tour areas of the home where tea service took place and will participate in an afternoon tea given with costumed interpreters. 60 minutes.
