Prince of the Ports: Doug Marchand
By Allison Hersh Photography By Christine Hall

“The Port of Savannah is a gateway to the entire Southeastern United States, which is the fastest-growing region of our country” (Doug Marchand).

DOUG MARCHAND REIGNS supreme as Savannah’s undisputed prince of the ports. As executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, he navigates the Savannah River’s critical role in the Hostess City’s prosperity. Recently inducted into the International Maritime Hall of Fame, this aquatic dynamo has spent the past 14 years transforming Georgia’s maritime industry into a powerful economic engine. Under his leadership, the GPA’s container volume has quadrupled, and the Port of Savannah has become the nation’s fourth largest — and fastest growing — container port.

The water has taught me: Respect. I appreciate its many benefits and the danger it can bring. I am extremely conscious of hurricane season and the preparation required for homes as well as businesses.

Staying afloat: It is an absolute requirement that the Port of Savannah be deepened. A deeper channel will bring additional international trade that will greatly benefit our economy and this region as a whole for many years to come. International trade fuels every aspect of our economy and creates jobs in every industry. The benefits range from direct, port-related jobs to the many related industries and professions that provide and benefit from port services.

The best part:  The peace and tranquility when I get out on a boat is like nothing else. The water is just a natural part of my life.
